(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Pat Tillman, fallen Army Ranger and former Arizona State University football player, will be honored on April 12 in Colorado Springs.
The ASU Alumni Association hosts Tillman Honor Runs across the United States to honor Tillman’s legacy and raise money for the Tillman Scholars program at the hero’s alma mater. The program empowers military service leaders to make a positive impact in their communities.
Scott Davis, event coordinator for the Southern Colorado Tillman Honor Run, joined Matt Meister, FOX21 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist in the studio to highlight the 4.2-mile run.
“He was a famous college football player for the Phoenix Cardinals and then went into the U.S. Army, decided to give up his career, and he was killed in action in Afghanistan,” said Davis. “So his family has launched the Pat Tillman Foundation to honor his legacy, and this event helps fund that foundation as well as the Tillman Scholars at Arizona State University.”
This year is the 21st Tillman Honor Run, which is an enormous event in Arizona, but for those who want to participate in Colorado, it will be hosted locally at the Penrose Event Center, and anyone is welcome to join.
“The event is hosted by the local Colorado Alumni Association for Arizona State, but it’s a public event, everyone’s welcome to come, it’s a family-friendly event,” said Davis. “It’s a walk and run, people with strollers are welcome.”
The run is 4.2 miles in remembrance of the number Tillman wore on his jersey.
“This is really to honor a legacy,” said Davis. “It’s not a timed event. But it is an important way to recognize and honor him.”
