Pedestrian identified in fatal crash on South Academy

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) announced the identity of a pedestrian involved in a fatal crash in early August.

On Aug. 1, CSPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue regarding a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, it was determined that the pedestrian was deceased on scene due to injuries suffered during the crash.

Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and took over the investigation.

El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and identified the pedestrian as 59-year-old Sonia Gomez. CSPD said Gomez was crossing the street from west to east, and the vehicle was traveling south on Academy Boulevard.

This is the 33rd traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year, at this time last year there were 27 traffic fatalities. In the past 365 days, there have been 56 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
