(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — At a hearing on Wednesday, Jan. 17, it was decided that Carie Hallford, one of the owners of Return to Nature Funeral Home, would stand trial on numerous charges including Abuse of a Corpse.
The judge stated during the hearing that it appears that Carie Hallford and her husband Jon ran into financial trouble and could not maintain their services in Colorado Springs. As a result, they began moving the bodies from the Colorado Springs location to Penrose.
At the hearing on Wednesday, enough evidence was presented for Carie to be tried on Abuse of a Corpse Charges, as well as Money Laundering, Forgery, and Theft. Some of these charges stem from a pattern of conduct in which Carie would prepare death certificates with information she knew to be inaccurate, according to the judge.
The judge stated that the forgery and entering of inaccurate information was all in an attempt to conceal the abuse of a corpse that she allegedly knew was occurring in the Penrose location.
Also at the hearing, Carie Hallford’s bond was lowered to $100,000 from $2 million, similar to her husband’s bond, which was also reduced at a hearing earlier in January.
