People living in Springs Canyon neighborhood raise concerns about proposed 144-unit apartment complex

(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo) — It was last September near the intersection of North Carefree Circle and Peterson Road where Michelle Bork was finishing up a run around the Springs Ranch neighborhood.

All she needed to do was cross the street, and she would be done.

“I have crossed it hundreds, if not thousands of times,” Bork said.

But when she crossed, she says a large SUV was turning onto Peterson and hit her.

“I flew quite a few feet across the lanes of traffic, and as a result it created a temporal fracture where he hit me multiple fractured ribs, fractures in my spine,” Bork said.

Bork also told us she had a lacerated liver and a collapsed lung as a result of being hit. So, when she heard a new apartment complex was being built on the corner of Peterson and North Carefree, she could not believe it.

“Who in their right mind would try to fit that many apartments in that tiny spot of land?” Bork asked. “That’s like me trying to fit back in my high school size four jeans, it’s just not happening right now.”

Shawnee Lovato, who lives less than a mile away from Bork, also feels strongly about the apartment complex not being the right fit for the open space.

“We’re not against something being built there, but it has to be something that’s reasonable for that little plot of land,” Lovato said.

According to the application, developers are aiming to fit 144 units on just 6.94 acres of land. Lovato and Bork are concerned can’t meet the needs for parking cars.

Along with parking, they believe traffic will increase in the area and fear more pedestrians could be at risk of getting hurt.

Both Lovato and Bork are also worried about the water usage from the apartment complex as the area already has water issues.

“Our neighborhood is already on water restrictions,” Bork said.

Both brought their concerns to a meeting hosted by the developers back in October, but they felt they did not get any answers during that meeting.

“Kind of felt like none of our questions were being answered,” Lovato said. “They were being redirected.”

Now, they will bring their concerns to an appeal hearing with the city’s planning commission on Wednesday morning.

FOX21 News did reach out to the developer, Lincoln Avenue Communities, on Monday for a statement on the upcoming hearing along with the concerns brought up by Bork and Lovato and to this point we have not heard back.
