Petitioners gather for Mayor Graham recall

(PUEBLO) — A petition to recall Mayor Heather Graham is now making its way across Steele City. Some people in Pueblo are frustrated with her time in office and are pushing for a recall election and a vote for a new mayor.

On Sunday, March 16, petitioners gathered at Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library to get new signatures and petitioners to join the conversation. They say they need sixty-three hundred signatures but hope to get ten-thousand.

Some people are frustrated with things like the city budget, stripping funding from non-profit organizations, and the mayor’s “disregard for historic preservation,” which are only some of the concerns addressed in the petition.

“It’s overwhelming. So many points of how she’s demonstrating that she wants to do nothing to help Pueblo,” said Renee Zink, who is a part of the petition committee.

On Sunday, those who stand behind the recall for Mayor Graham gathered to also educate the community on how they can take part by becoming a petitioner.

“We’re trying to get more petition carriers so that they know how to do it, and it seems like a lot of people are asking, ‘how do we get involved?’ So, this is why we’re here to help teach people,” said Zink.

The petition contains eleven items against the mayor, such as fiscal irresponsibility and failure to address critical issues.

“The main point that I want to emphasize right now is that the efforts shown by the mayor are consistent with the class warfare that we have been seeing across the nation,” said Zink.

It was first submitted to the city on March 4th, and now some people are calling for a recall election and mayoral replacement, but those behind the recall are confident they will get enough signatures.

“We were down on the flea market. We’ve gone to different areas, and we found support everywhere,” said Zink.

One of Zink’s biggest concerns with the mayor is the homeless community.

“The houseless camps being uprooted and devastated. I mean, the way they frame it, I feel like the language is even attacking them because they just try to justify everything they’re doing,” she said.

This comes after the mayor held various clean-ups around the city, relocating many homeless people along Fountain Creek.

“Those are the people that need the help from the city the most, and those are the people that are getting stomped on the hardest it just makes absolutely no sense,” said Zink. “Those are the people that need to be protected, and they’re being killed.”

However, other community members are not sure how they feel about the petition.

“I haven’t sat down with somebody that knows all of the details, so I really don’t know,” said a veteran who chose to remain anonymous. “And who’s going to replace her?”

He said he supports some of the mayor’s actions and agrees more needs to be done.

“I’m for cleaning up the homeless camps. A lot of people that are homeless are not bad people, but they trash everything. They don’t clean up after themselves.”

The petition also includes retaliation against opposition, using police and fire department staff, and allowing illegal ordinances to be proposed, creating expensive consequences for the city.

“It’s very disingenuous, so I can say very little about what I agree with her on,” said Zink.

Graham called the allegations “untruthful and comical”
