(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — It will be a great time to keep an eye on the skies this week as a rare astronomical event is about to occur. Seven planets in the solar system will be visible in the sky, some you will be able to see with little help.
According to NASA, on Friday night, Feb. 28, five planets, including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will all be visible without any optical assistance. Neptune and Uranus will need some help from a telescope.
NASA says this event is technically called an alignment. Although this event will be rare in that you can see Mercury and Venus, the planets are actually always lined up.
The position the planets are lined up in is called an “ecliptic,” where they orbit the sun. The catch is that we just can’t see all of the planets at once. Some planets orbit closer to the sun, which makes it more difficult to see.
Skygazers are encouraged to look towards the south shortly after sunset on Friday to see the spectacle in the sky.
