(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A man is under arrest after he allegedly became combative with both officers and medical personnel following a suspected DUI crash in which he rolled his car onto its side.
According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), officers responded just before 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 to the intersection of Pueblo Boulevard and Goodnight Avenue, right outside the Pueblo Zoo, on a report of a single-car rollover crash. The involved car had reportedly come to rest on its side, PPD said.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect, 45-year-old Mario Deherrera, exhibiting signs of being intoxicated. Officers took Deherrera into custody on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Deherrera declined medical treatment on scene, but was taken to the hospital to be medically cleared.
PPD said while in transport and upon arrival at the hospital, Deherrera became “increasingly volatile”–refusing to get out of the patrol car and cursing at both officers and medical staff. Once medically cleared, PPD said officers once again struggled with Deherrera as he refused to get into the patrol car. Deherrera also allegedly spit at and repeatedly kicked an officer.
Additional officers had to respond in order to get Deherrera into the patrol car, and he was finally booked into the Pueblo County Jail on charges of DUI, assault on a peace officer, careless driving, and failure to present evidence of insurance.
