(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said a stand-off on Wednesday, July 9, led to a house fire after the suspect allegedly poured gasoline on the front porch.
According to PPD, on Wednesday, just before 11 p.m., officers were called to the 2000 block of Pine Street near Minnequa Avenue and I-25 about a reported domestic disturbance involving weapons. When police arrived, they learned a man, later identified as Ernesto Alarcon, had allegedly kidnapped a victim at gunpoint; however, the victim managed to escape and call for help.

As police secured the perimeter of the home, they saw Alarcon pouring gasoline on the front porch. Alarcon then barricaded himself inside and made statements indicating the desire for police to use lethal force against him.
PPD obtained a search warrant, and PPD’s SWAT team was deployed to help in the situation. Police established communication with Alarcon and started negotiations that lasted for several hours.
At around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, smoke and flames were seen coming from the rear of the home; by 3:33 a.m., the fire had spread throughout the house. Alarcon allegedly told police he was going to exit the home and to prepare for a confrontation.
PPD said as the house became fully engulfed in flames, Alarcon exited while carrying a high-powered AR-style rifle over his shoulder and a shotgun in hand. He attempted to provoke the SWAT officers but did not aim his weapons at them.
Police used less lethal options and leveraged the smoke from the fire to bring the standoff to an end at around 4:30 a.m.
Alarcon was arrested and is facing several charges, including Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Second-Degree Kidnapping, First-Degree Arson, Menacing, and Possession of a Large-Capacity Magazine (prohibited).
“This prolonged and intense standoff concluded peacefully due to the excellent training and commendable restraint exhibited by Pueblo Police officers,” wrote PPD.
