(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A man has been arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence (DUI) after he admitted to police that he thought he’d hit a dog when in actuality he’d allegedly hit two women who were walking on an on-ramp to I-25, killing them.
According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), officers responded to the northbound I-25 on-ramp at 13th Street around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, after a report of a crash and a car stopped on the nearby railroad tracks.
When officers arrived, they found the car on the train tracks and two women, one who was injured and one dead. The injured woman was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries.
Officers identified the registered owner of the car, 41-year-old Carlos Miranda, and located him at his home. During an interview, Miranda allegedly admitted that he had been the one driving the car involved in the crash, but said he was not aware he hit two women, he thought he had hit a dog.
The investigation revealed the two women were walking southbound on the northbound on-ramp, pushing a bicycle, when they were hit by the car headed northbound on the on-ramp.
Miranda is being charged with DUI and two counts of vehicular homicide. He has been booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center and is due in court on June 26.
