(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) is alerting the public to a scam involving people impersonating UCCS police officers.
According to UCCS, the university’s police department became aware of a scam involving people falsely posing as UCCS police officers. The scammers are contacting people by phone and advising them that they face imminent arrest due to an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty unless they pay a fine.
UCCS said in at least one case, the caller was able to spoof the number of the UCCS Police Department’s dispatch number (719) 255-3111.
UCCS wants to reassure the public that UCCS police will never demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest as the callers did. Those methods are common red flags for fraud, and UCCS suggests not engaging with the caller or providing any personal information. If you get such a call, UCCS says to hang up immediately, and you can report the incident to the department by calling dispatch after you hang up.
