PPD seize over 1,000 fentanyl pills, guns in drug bust

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said detectives executing a search warrant were able to recover over 1,000 fentanyl pills among other drugs and weapons.

PPD said on July 31 at around 2:30 p.m., detectives with the Narcotics and Gang Unit executed a search warrant on a home in the 2000 block of Belmont Avenue near Lake Minnequa, on information gathered regarding possible drug activity of the suspect identified as 29-year-old Nicholis Smith.

While detectives were watching the home, Smith exited carrying a backpack and got into his car. Police tried to contact Smith but he tried to drive off as they approached. One detective was able to pin the vehicle between the detective’s car and the home. Smith was ordered out of the car and he complied, PPD said.

Officers found a pistol in the front pocket of his pants, and he was taken into custody without incident. A search of his car found two backpacks, the one Smith was carrying and another. According to PPD, the first backpack had about 110 grams of fentanyl pills, 8.3 grams of cocaine, and 2.5 grams of methamphetamine along with a pack of dextroamphetamine pills. The second backpack had 6.1 grams of fentanyl inside and officers found cash on the driver’s side floorboard.

PPD detectives cleared the home and contacted five other people, three of whom were arrested on warrants and taken to the county jail. During the search of the home, detectives found 2 grams of fentanyl, 1.7 grams of methamphetamine, a rifle, and a shotgun.
