(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A suspect who was 17 years old at the time of a shooting on Pueblo’s south side has been served and transferred from Colorado Springs to face murder charges in the death of Ian Martinez at the end of July.
According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), David Michael Lucero was served with a warrant for first-degree murder on Monday, Aug. 18–one day after his 18th birthday.
Lucero was identified as a suspect after detectives developed sufficient evidence to link him to the July 28 shooting death of 31-year-old Ian Martinez.
Officers originally responded to a report of a possible shooting shortly after 9 a.m. on July 28 in the 600 block of East Arroyo Avenue, east of the Northern Avenue exit of I-25. When officers arrived, they found Martinez in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Martinez was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
PPD said Lucero was already in custody in Colorado Springs on a parole hold when he was served with the murder charges. He has since been transferred and booked into the Pueblo County Jail, where he remains under a cash-only bond of $3 million.
Martinez’s death marked the seventh in Pueblo in 2025. At the same time in 2024, there had been 15 homicides.
