(PUEBLO) — The Pueblo Democratic Party has censured Councilwoman Sarah Martinez after they said she admitted to using “stolen” Democratic data to help City Council President Heather Graham’s campaign. Graham is the Republican candidate running against Nick Gradisar for Pueblo’s upcoming mayoral election.
The Pueblo Democratic Party said Martinez had access to Democratic data connected to the Ballot Issue 2A campaign, which seeks to raise lodging tax to fund childcare in Pueblo. Ballot Issue 2A has bipartisan support within the Pueblo City Council. Democrats claim she downloaded and used the data to create targeted lists for Heather Graham.
“Outraged” Pueblo Democrats released a statement on Jan. 19 saying, “This proprietary data is considered a trade secret, and Councilwoman Martinez and the Graham campaign could be considered civilly liable as this is textbook misappropriation of trade secrets.”
They also noted the illegality of pooling resources between the 2A campaign and the Graham campaign and mentioned the irony of a Republican “law and order” candidate stealing data to manipulate election results.
They added that several 2A campaign donors, including the Colorado Health Foundation, are openly progressive and will likely not appreciate their data being used to support a Republican candidate.
On Jan. 19, the Pueblo Democratic Party Executive Committee voted 97% to censure Councilwoman Sarah Martinez. She will be removed as a precinct chairperson and member of the Central Committee for the Pueblo County Democratic Party.
FOX21 has reached out to Martinez for comment and are waiting to hear back.
