Purple Heart Ceremony at Fort Carson

(FORT CARSON, Colo,) — A Purple Heart Ceremony at Fort Carson on Tuesday honored Captain James McDaniel. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his heroic actions in 2012 in Afghanistan.

Captain McDaniel suffered a traumatic brain injury because of a vehicle explosion, but he quickly regained composure to provide cover fire and support evacuation efforts.

“Captain McDaniel, who at the time was Specialist McDaniel, was serving as a Military Police Soldier with the Third Brigade Special Troops Battalion from the Fourth Infantry Division. On July 9th, 2012, Taliban insurgents attacked the provincial headquarters with a vehicle borne explosive device,” said Major General David S. Doyle.

Fort Carson officials say he demonstrated exceptional courage and selflessness and put the safety of his teammates above his own.

“He displayed remarkable composure and tactical awareness. His efforts ensured the safe evacuation of U.S. personnel, the continued suppression of enemy insurgents, and ultimately neutralized the threat,” said Major General Doyle.

Captain McDaniel currently serves as the Provost Marshal for the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team in the Fourth Infantry Division.

“Wearing the uniform right now feels a little heavy. I won’t lie to you. I am beyond honored and humbled to feel the weight of this medal on my chest today,” said Captain McDaniel.

The impacts of his traumatic brain injury couldn’t be seen at first, but once they developed, he says the army helped him regain his strength.

“It was a wave of emotion, as I go through accepting [the award]… you have to relive your moments, that you actually were wounded in action. So being able to receive it just kind of closed the chapter. Made me feel proud to serve my country,” said Captain McDaniel.

He says receiving the award is bittersweet, for both the recognition and the reminder of adversity.

“Receiving this honor, first of all, is very humbling. I join a very time honored corps of individuals who have served before me, who have either been wounded or are given the ultimate sacrifice. So I’m very honored to stand amongst them,” said Captain McDaniel.

He says he feels proud to continue serving our country.
