(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — Some citizens may be seeing some smoke in the mountain range west of Colorado Springs.
On Friday, May 23, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) began its Rainbow Gulch prescribed fire near Rampart Reservoir and Forest Service Road 300 in El Paso County. USFS warned the 750-acre burn would be highly visible from Rampart Reservoir, Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, HWY 67, and I-25.
The project is part of a larger effort to reduce wildfire risks in the front range, USFS said fuels like pine needles, grasses, leaves, and woody debris left over from earlier stages of the project are being burned.
Rainbow Gulch will not be the only prescribed burn in these upcoming weeks in El Paso County. A 1,000-acre prescribed fire “Mothball Springs,” is planned to begin Sunday, June 1, east of Woodland Park.
