(PUEBLO) — Months after the City of Pueblo took over the Pueblo Rescue Mission’s buildings, the city has awarded the contract for shelter operations to its interim overseer.
On Monday, June 9, the City Council voted to award SafeSide Recovery Foundation the contract for shelter operations and use the facilities located at 710 W. 4th Street and 728 W. 4th Street, known as the Pueblo Shelter campus.
SafeSide Recovery began interim oversight of the Pueblo Shelter when the former nonprofit, Pueblo Rescue Mission, was dissolved in December 2024. Pueblo Rescue Mission dissolved months after an investigation revealed an employee was allegedly stealing funds from people staying at the shelter. At around the same time, the City said the nonprofit was suspended from services through Care and Share Foodbank for Southern Colorado for misappropriating food.
According to the City, SafeSide Recovery Foundation answered a bid and fulfilled the requirements outlined by the City to take over.
“We’re excited to have SafeSide Recovery as the official permanent operations manager of the Pueblo Shelter,” said Mayor Heather Graham. “While they’ve been operating as the interim oversight, the City is grateful to have a long-term partner in place to provide the stability and oversight necessary to serve our unhoused neighbors in Pueblo.”
