SEAL Virtual Reality Experience at Pikes Peak Air Show

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The U.S. Navy is bringing the Nimitz Virtual Reality Experience, which simulates a high-speed Navy SEAL mission, to the Pikes Peak Air Show on Saturday, August 17, and Sunday, August 18. The Navy will also showcase the Nimitz at Doherty High School on Thursday, August 15.

The Nimitz is housed in an unfolding 18-wheeler, allowing visitors to go through a video briefing before strapping on an Oculus Rift headset and a piece of wearable technology, often used by club DJs, called the SubPac that percusses in real time to the sounds of the mission.

Participants use a steering wheel and throttle system to navigate the mission, replicating the actual sensation of piloting a high-speed Navy Special Warfare Combatant Craft. Once completing the mission, visitors move to the debriefing station to receive feedback and a performance grade.
