Shelter-in-place lifted after barricaded suspect arrested

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A shelter-in-place was in effect for a little under an hour on Sunday, March 9 as a suspect barricaded himself in a home of people he knew, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

CSPD reported that around noon on Sunday, officers responded to the 2000 block of South El Paso Avenue, near South Circle Drive and East Cheyenne Road, where a man had allegedly forced his way into the home of people who knew him. The victims were able to leave the home and the suspect remained inside the home illegally. A shelter-in-place alert was issued around 12:45 p.m.

When officers arrived, the suspect demanded that officers shoot him, according to CSPD, and he refused to comply with orders to leave the home and surrender, instead staying barricaded in the home for a significant amount of time.

According to police, the man eventually began interacting with the officers again but refused any attempts to convince him to surrender peacefully. Police officers used non-lethal tools to subdue and arrest him.

The suspect, identified as Brandon Crabtree, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. No officers were injured. The Shelter-in-Place alert was lifted around 1:40 p.m.
