Solar eclipse celebration for newborns in Springs NICU

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Some special new arrivals celebrated their first few days in conjunction with the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. The Celebration Committee at The Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), comprised of nurses, volunteers, and support staff, ensured the newborns were ready for the occasion.

Sporting adorable onesies and special safety glasses, the little NICU warriors posed for commemorative photographs to mark the occasion. While they won’t be viewing the eclipse themselves, it was a chance to bring some normalcy and celebration to their families during a stressful time. Some special medical staff put their paws in the game and also posed for photos.

Additionally, the Pediatric Ophthalmology team at the Children’s Hospital Colorado shared safety tips for ALL kids when experiencing an eclipse:

Make sure to only use ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses when looking at the eclipse – regular sunglasses are not a replacement

Turn completely away from the sun when removing the glasses

Make sure you are not looking above or below the glasses, and watch your child to make sure they are using them properly

Looking through a camera or binoculars is not safe
