Spotted Monday: Was it “Air Force One?”

(COLORADO SPRINGS) – Did you see it overhead on Monday? One of the United States Air Force Boeing VC-25 planes used for presidential transport was in southern Colorado for training.

According to the official Air Force website, “The presidential air transport fleet consists of two specially configured Boeing 747-200B’s — tail numbers 28000 and 29000 — with the Air Force designation VC-25.”

The VC-25 designation is important because only when the president is aboard either aircraft, or any Air Force aircraft, is the radio call sign “Air Force One.” So, you didn’t see “Air Force One” on Monday.

The two VC-25 aircraft are operated and maintained by the Presidential Airlift Group, and are assigned to Air Mobility Command’s 89th Airlift Wing located at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

According to a source familiar with aircraft operations at the Colorado Springs Airport and Peterson Air Force Base the VC-25 with tail designation 28000 flew several loops around the airport while practice landing on a runway, before the plane was fully stopped at Peterson Air Force Base for a time.
