Storm totals: Lime-sized hail fell in El Paso County

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — Many parts of Colorado saw severe weather on Sunday, July 6, with large hail falling in many areas in El Paso County.

On Sunday afternoon, parts of Monument, Black Forest, Peyton, and Colorado Springs were hit by storms that brought heavy rainfall and hail. Check out the hail sizes that fell below:

According to NOAA Storm reports, some of the hail caused window damage and broken skylights. Hail that was reported to have fallen near Cheyenne Road fell for 40 minutes, causing the damage. Hail can produce damage to crops and personal property, and small hail can quickly turn large which, if falling at 100 mph, can injure or kill, per the NWS.

The largest recorded in El Paso County yesterday, at 2 inches, can be compared to the size of a lime or a medium-sized Hen’s egg. Cities across Colorado received hail, with the largest, at 2.75 inches, equivalent to baseball size, reported in Arapahoe County.

The storm also led the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo to issue a Flash Flood Warning on Sunday evening in Southwest El Paso County, which included Southern Colorado Springs, Fountain, Security-Widefield, Security, Fort Carson, and Stratmoor. The alert was later rescinded at around 9 p.m. when flooding was no longer expected to pose a threat.

Overall, El Paso County received between 0.04 to 1.74 inches of rain, with the highest amount of rainfall reported in the Broadmoor neighborhood.

Isolated thunderstorms are expected on Monday, July 8, across the region. Storms are possible for the next several days, with wind gusts up to 60 mph, lighting, heavy rain, and hail being possible.
