(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Search and Rescue team partnered with two other agencies to assist a stranded hiker in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest and is cautioning hikers to bring the essentials if embarking on an outdoor adventure.
On Sunday, April 6, PCSO Search and Rescue partnered with Rye Fire Protection District and UCHealth Lifeline 5 to assist a stranded hiker in the Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness. According to PCSO, the Pueblo County Communication Center received a report of an overdue and stranded hiker following an extended backpacking trip complicated by recent snow.
Eight Search and Rescue members responded, coordinating with Lifeline 5 to initiate a search operation. The hiker was found at a campsite 1.5 miles from the trailhead. Team members then assisted the hiker in safely regaining the trail and hiking out of the area.
As weather changes and more people are ready to take on the outdoors, PCSO encourages all outdoor enthusiasts to carry the 10 essentials, which, according to the National Park Service, include navigation, first-aid supplies, food, and repair kit and tools. These items are meant to help hikers in the event of minor injuries, sudden weather changes, or unexpected delays.
Outdoor enthusiasts are also encouraged to establish a reliable check-in plan and call or text 911 in an emergency.
