Student stopped before bringing gun to school

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A student in Colorado Springs School District 11 (D11) was stopped on their way to school after their family noticed a gun had been removed from a family car.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), a School Resource Officer from Tesla High School responded around 10:30 a.m. to a hospital to investigate a “suspicious circumstance” involving a minor. The officer learned the teen had reportedly stolen a gun from a family member’s car, which had been secured in accordance with state law.

The teen had allegedly placed the gun in their backpack and left for school. CSPD said when family members noticed the gun was gone, they were able to get in contact with the teen and recover the gun before they made it to school grounds.

CSPD said the teen had been placed on a mental health hold, and the gun was placed into evidence along with the teen’s cell phone.

The investigation is ongoing, CSPD said.
