(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A 62-year-old man wanted on child sexual assault warrants was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 27, after a standoff with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) SWAT Team east of Colorado Springs.
According to EPSO, around 3 p.m. on Thursday, the SWAT Team responded to the 18000 block of Highway 94, north of Schriever SFB, to try and locate 62-year-old Matthew Kalkman. EPSO said Kalkman was wanted on numerous outstanding warrants, including charges related to sexual assaults on children and failure to register as a sex offender.
When deputies arrived at a home on Highway 94, they gave instructions for everyone inside to come out. One family member complied and was brought to safety, though Kalkman barricaded himself inside the home and refused to surrender. Negotiators made contact with Kalkman, at which point he allegedly made threats to shoot deputies or blow them up.
EPSO said negotiations continued for several hours, and a Peak Alert was issued instructing neighbors to shelter in place. When Kalkman still refused to surrender, EPSO said the SWAT Team removed the front door of the home and used chemical irritants to try and get Kalkman to come out. EPSO said he stepped outside several times and yelled at deputies before quickly retreating inside the home.
During this standoff, Kalkman allegedly fired a gun several times inside the home–one shot hit an armored vehicle that deputies were using for protection, and another narrowly missed a deputy. EPSO said a robot was then sent in and successfully removed a gun from the home.
Eventually, Kalkman surrendered and was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for assessment before being booked into the El Paso County Jail on his outstanding warrants, with new charges pending in connection to the standoff. No deputies or bystanders were injured during the incident.
“The bravery, professionalism, and restraint displayed by our deputies in this incident cannot be overstated,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “Their training, expertise, and the resources at their disposal played a critical role in bringing this situation to a safe resolution. This could have ended very differently, but thankfully no members of my Office were injured. I’m grateful for their unwavering commitment to protecting this community and for the teamwork which ensured a peaceful outcome.”
EPSO thanked the agencies that came to its aid during the standoff, including the Colorado Springs Police Department, Ellicott Fire Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department, and American Medical Response.
