Suspect arrested in Pueblo officer-involved shooting

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection to an officer-involved shooting in Pueblo County on Tuesday, June 24, in which a deputy was injured.

According to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), 23-year-old Hayden Grinstead was arrested on Friday following his release from the hospital. He is facing charges of first-degree assault on a peace officer, second-degree assault on a peace officer, criminal mischief, vehicular eluding, cruelty to animals, and two counts of contempt of court.

On Tuesday, deputies were responding to a suspicious vehicle call at the Loaf N Jug, 31918 East Highway 96, when they attempted to contact the driver, identified as Grinstead. PCSO said Grinstead drove off, attempting to elude deputies, and hit two patrol vehicles, injuring a deputy. During Grinstead’s attempt to escape deputies, a deputy fired at Grinstead’s vehicle and hit him twice, according to PCSO.

Grinstead drove westbound on Hwy 96 toward Pueblo. Deputies chased the vehicle and conducted a PIT maneuver, causing Grinstead’s vehicle to roll over near Hwy 96 and Victory Lane in Pueblo’s East Side. Grinstead and a passenger were taken to the hospital for their injuries. PCSO said the passenger was treated and released.
