(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported on Friday, May 16, that the agency did not realize a homeless camp was tapping into one of its light poles on I-25 until making the discovery last week during a cleanup at the encampment in Colorado Springs.
The CDOT told FOX21 News that there is no record of this exact situation happening in the past, but areas of vandalism and significant accumulation of trash from homeless camps can often be found under bridges.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said the camp was using the electricity from a pole under a bridge north of the Woodmen Road exit to power equipment like televisions, lighting, and stereo equipment.
According to CDOT, the lights are managed by the City of Colorado Springs and Colorado Springs Utilities.
