The Rockies could have the worst 50-game start in recent MLB history

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Rockies have had historically horrible seasons in recent years, but coming up on the first 50 games of the 2025 season, the Rockies may hit another losing record.

Over the past few years, the Rockies have been less than impressive. In 2023, the Rockies broke the franchise record of 100 losses in one season, finishing as the team’s worst season in history. In 2024, the Rockies pulled out a few more wins, making it only the second-worst season in the team’s history. While it could seemingly only go up from there — not for the Rockies.

This season, the Rockies narrowly missed out on the worst 25-game start in MLB history, with a 4-21 record, and the Rockies are inching closer to another record: the worst MLB start through 50 games since the Wild Card was instituted in 1995.

Worst recent MLB records in history

The Rockies are three games away from their first 50 games with an 8-39 record. The Rockies have to win at least two of their three upcoming games to avoid setting or tying the worst record in recent MLB history for the first 50 games.

Here are the worst starts, through 50 games, according to the MLB:

2023 Athletics: 10-40

1996 Detroit Tigers: 12-38

2013 Miami Marlins: 13-37

2006 Kansas City Royals: 13-37

2005 Kansas City Royals: 13-37

2003 Detroit Tigers: 13-37

2013 Houston Astros: 14-36

2009 Washington Nationals: 14-36

2003 San Diego Padres: 14-36

2001 Tampa Bay Devil Rays: 14-36

While the Rockies could turn it around, this season’s start will still be on the list for one of the worst in history since 1995. This will be in addition to other historic records broken this season, after the Rockies endured the worst shutout loss in franchise history and were the first team to start the season 7-36 in the modern era.

Despite the Rockies’ record, that hasn’t stopped fans from coming out. On May 10, Andrew Mason, a Denver sports reporter, said there were 38,423 fans in the stands at Coors Field during the Rockies’ worst shutout loss.
