The science of fireworks

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — As we gear up for the Fourth of July Holiday this Friday, many Southern Coloradoans will soon enjoy firework spectaculars. But have you ever wondered how they get fireworks to be a certain color?

Essentially, fireworks manufacturers use chemistry and science to make fireworks burn at a certain color. While packing combustible material. They essentially pack a certain amount of a certain type of element into the firework mixture. Whichever element they use will help determine what color the firework appears.

Here are the following elements used for certain kinds of firework colors:

Red fireworks: Add Strontium

Orange fireworks: Calcium

Yellow fireworks: Sodium

Green fireworks: Barium

Blue fireworks: Copper

Purple fireworks: A mixture of Red and Blue. So Strontium and Copper

Silver fireworks: Magnesium and Aluminum

White fireworks: The colors that make silver with Titanium added.
