(COLORADO) — The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is officially releasing its 2024 speed violation citation rankings, and the top county has more than double the citations compared to the second on the list.
Colorado saw its array of speedsters in 2024, such as the viral motorcyclist who filmed himself speeding over 150 mph while going from Colorado Springs to Denver.
“The temptation to speed may be all around you, but you won’t get out of a ticket if you violate the law and get pulled over, “ said Colorado State Patrol Chief Col. Matthew C. Packard, “Our goal isn’t to go out and ticket everyone; we want drivers to do the right thing and drive like a trooper is a passenger in their vehicle. Citations are meant to correct poor driving choices, and you are literally in the driver’s seat to determine the likelihood of a traffic stop.”
In 2023, speeding was the number one reason behind injury and fatal crashes. CSP said some communities and roadways in Colorado have exhibited more consistent speeding issues in 2024, with the top five counties being:
El Paso County: 2,161 citations
Douglas: 862
Jefferson: 831
Fremont: 727
Mesa: 684
El Paso, Douglas, and Jefferson counties have remained in the top five counties for speeding citations for the past four years. This is the third consecutive time in four years that Fremont County has entered the top five, and the first time in four years Mesa County has entered the list.
As for the roadways, the Colorado State Patrol looked at the top five roads with the highest speeding intervals and listed these five highways:
I70
I25
H50
H24
H285
The top four roadways have held their positions for six consecutive years, while H285, came into the top five in 2022 and has held the spot for the past two years.
