DENVER (KDVR) — Denver native Tim Allen will bring his comedy tour, A Night of Comedy, to the Bellco Theatre on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., and he took some time to talk about his childhood with FOX31’s morning show hosts.
Allen is known for his roles in the “Toy Story” movie series, “Wild Hogs,” “The Santa Clause” and “Galaxy Quest,” in addition to TV appearances. He appeared on FOX sitcom “Last Man Standing” as well as ABC’s “Home Improvement,” where he was Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. He was also a star and executive producer most recently in the Disney+ series “The Santa Clauses.”
He sat down with FOX31’s morning show on Tuesday to discuss his connection to Denver and his current comedy tour.
“I love it, my brother still lives there,” Allen said, noting that he went to Dora Moore Elementary School when living in the Mile High City. “My brothers went to East (High School) and we used to go to Crestmoor, which is a community pool across Colorado Boulevard, and 2nd or 3rd Avenue if I remember correctly.”
Allen noted that in Last Man Standing the show used a Denver neighborhood, and said it was all done in the city.
“Most of the comedy that I’ve done is because … it’s from growing up in Colorado,” he said. “I had a great father who unfortunately was killed in a traffic accident out there.”
Allen reminisced about how he grew up with five male cousins and his four brothers who were raised by women, which inspired his comedy.
“Everything about growing up in Colorado is wonderful,” he said. “My whole life has been all men in the house, run by women. My whole scheme of my jokes is what it’s like to grow up, what it’s like to be a boy, and then, especially these days when you’re not sure if you should be a man, or what you identify as — right now I identify as a fire hydrant.”
Allen emphasized that his comedy tour stops are not family shows — IDs will be checked at the door to ensure that every audience member is over 18. However, he said much of his comedy is about Christmas and getting gifts.
“My wife will be with me this time, and my daughters — my 14-year-old, just recently my wife let her see it,” Allen said. “I use ‘pirate language,’ as my grandma would call it.”
No matter what he has in store for the show, Allen said he’s excited to be back in the state.
“I’m geeked about getting back to Colorado,” he said. “I’ll be there Friday, going to be able to spend some time with my family and do the show.”
