Trinidad police: “Active warrant” for former Trinidad State College wrestling coach

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) — The Trinidad Police Department has confirmed to FOX21 News that there is an active warrant out for a former Trinidad State College Wrestling Coach.

In early June, FOX21 News received a report that former Trinidad State Wrestling Coach John Lewis had a warrant out for his arrest. On Friday, June 6, the Trinidad Police Department confirmed that Lewis was previously questioned in February, and there is now an active warrant for him. He is wanted for:

Tampering with a Witness or Victim

Criminal Extortion

Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

Unlawful Acts – Providing Alcohol to Minors

Lewis was reportedly hired at Trinidad State College in 2023, per the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

Lewis is no longer listed as a coach on Trinidad State College’s website, and in December 2024, the college announced an interim coach for the team when students returned to campus.

In 2025, a college in Missouri reportedly hired John Lewis as the third Head Coach of the men’s wrestling program. According to the NWCA, Lewis “successfully recruited 52 wrestlers for the men’s and women’s programs, an accomplishment that highlights his ability to attract top talent,” at Trinidad State College.

FOX21 News has reached out to Trinidad State College and is waiting to hear back.
