(U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.) — The Air Force Thunderbirds flyover that was canceled due to inclement weather during the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) graduation on Thursday, May 29, was one of just two flyovers that were canceled in 22 years.
According to the base historian for Nellis Air Force Base, since 2003, two USAFA flyovers have been canceled; this year’s and also in 2013.
“I have gone through the 57th Wing histories. It looks like the Thunderbirds performed all scheduled USAFA flyovers going back to 2003 with the exception of 2013,” wrote the base historian, “that was the year of sequestration and all Thunderbird shows/flyovers were canceled except the first show at Titusville, Florida in March.”
According to the base historian, USAFA flyovers began in 1968.
“Previous to 2003, I really can’t say if any USAFA flyover was canceled… the histories pre-2003 are not that extensive and usually just include the Thunderbirds schedules.”
While this year’s graduation flyover and air show were canceled, the community did get a chance to see the Thunderbirds practice in the days prior.
The Thunderbirds are scheduled to be back in Southern Colorado later this year, as the current schedule shows that they are expected to perform in Pueblo on Sept. 27 and 28. They will also be in Loveland, Colorado, the week prior on Sept. 20 and 21.
