Trinidad’s historic district and the Champions Center restoration

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) — As we wrap up our ‘We Are Trinidad’ week, FOX21 Morning News took the show on the road and landed at the newly renovated Champions Center in the heart of Trinidad’s historic district.

To learn more about the Champions Center renovation and the work that went into it, FOX21 spoke with Karl Gabrielson, Managing Partner for Trinidad Commercial Construction, an independent construction management firm that focuses on commercial properties with a specialty in historic renovations.

On Friday morning, June 20, Gabrielson spoke to FOX21 extensively about the Champions Center, which is located at 127 North Commercial Street, and its vibrant history.

“The building was originally constructed in 1888, and the restoration project was a passion project of Jay Cimino, the founder and owner, and it was to spur economic development in Trinidad, and [because of] his love for history and historic preservation,” Gabrielson said.

A big part of the Champions Center restoration is the mural on site, which recreates the beauty of Trinidad’s historic downtown. “The artist on this was a gentleman named Douglas Rouse, he is a Colorado artist, and it took him about four months,” he said.

Other projects completed by Trinidad Commercial Construction include the Fox West Theatre on Main Street in Trinidad, along with the former Presbyterian Church, the Elm Street train depot, and the Trinidad Market Place. The company also worked on the recent renovation of the Pioneers Museum in Colorado Springs.
