Victim in fatal Sandalwood Drive hit-and-run crash identified

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said the victim in a fatal hit-and-run has been identified as 70-year-old Fred Brockway.

According to CSPD, on Sunday, May 11, at around 3 p.m., police were called to the intersection of Sandalwood Drive and South Murray Boulevard about a hit-and-run crash. Police’s investigation revealed a pedestrian, identified as Brockway, was crossing S. Murray Blvd. with the right-of-way when CSPD said a gold vehicle was traveling west on Sandalwood Drive, turned left to head south on S. Murray Blvd., and hit Brockway.

The vehicle left the scene of the crash, and Brockway was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Brockway succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, May 14.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Thursday, May 15, and identified Brockway.

On Thursday, CSPD’s Major Crash Team, along with the help of CSPD School Resource Officers and an Extra Duty Officer, contacted and arrested the 17-year-old suspected of driving the vehicle during the crash. The suspect is facing charges of Hit and Run Involving Death, a class 3 Felony, and Driver to Exercise Due Care to Pedestrians, a traffic infraction.

CSPD said this is the 12th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year; at this same time last year, there were 18 traffic fatalities.
