Waffles the porcupine makes her big decision on Groundhog Day

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — If word hasn’t quite gotten around to you yet, here is a quick spoiler alert: Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow Friday morning in Pennsylvania. That means he’s calling for an early Spring!

But is Phil the only animal that can forecast the weather? The FOX21 Storm Team did some digging, and it turns out that Southern Colorado has its own special furry forecaster – except this one is a little bit more prickly.

Waffles, a resident at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, is an eight-year-old cape porcupine. She was born at a facility in Indiana with her brother Flapjack before being moved here. Waffles’ unique name comes from the fact that her species is said to smell a bit like maple syrup.

Just like Phil, Waffles had a big decision to make at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and she spent the afternoon with meteorologists Ryan Matoush and Megan Montero making some last-minute calculations. When the time came, she made her decision.

Much to the crowd’s delight, Waffles chose early Spring!

After making her big decision, Ryan and Megan continued to offer her a variety of treats – thanking her for her prediction. Some of her favorite foods include:

Nuts

Almonds

Bread

Waffles is usually nocturnal and spends many of her late-night hours digging in her dirt stall. She also greatly enjoys taking naps!

Be sure to visit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo if you’d like to see Waffles in person!

According to zoo personnel, Waffles has roughly 60,000 quills on her body with each one having a different purpose. Some of her quills are used for sensory purposes, some are used for defense, and some are even used as a rattle. The rattling quills are meant to deter any nearby threats.
