WATCH: Drone video shows fireworks that sparked fire in Cañon City

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — New drone video from Cañon City shows firework embers landing on the ground during the July 4 display that was eventually cut short due to a resulting vegetation fire.

The Cañon City Area Fire Protection District responded to a fire on the west side of Skyline Drive resulting from the community fireworks display on Friday, July 4.

The fireworks display, which is fired from Skyline Drive, was cut short around 9:40 p.m. due to multiple spot fires that had popped up on the west side of Skyline Drive. The fire grew to about five acres before crews managed to get it contained just before 7 a.m. on July 5.

Following the incident, the Cañon City 4th of July Fireworks Committee released a statement reassuring the community that precautions were taken, including stationing extra firetrucks, water trucks, and first responders on-site.


Cañon City fireworks committee reaffirms safety commitment

The committee stated that they remain firmly committed to providing a safe 4th of July celebration for the community and are planning to regroup later in the year to explore alternative options, including the possibility of a non-flammable fireworks display or relocating the show to a more contained area, such as Centennial Park or Main Street.

No one was injured, and no structures were lost during the fire.
