DENVER (KDVR) — Evacuations were ordered Tuesday afternoon after a fire ignited near Interlaken in the Twin Lakes area.
The fire was estimated at around 165 acres as of Tuesday night and was burning about 12 miles southwest of Leadville, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire was burning on the south side of the lakes where there are not many homes but many campgrounds, and it’s hard to get to.
Helicopter drops were underway to battle the fire at the Interlaken Historic Resort. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said hikers were transported from Interlaken in a search and rescue boat.
“The Interlaken Historic District buildings are not threatened at this time, due to fire staff on site who have provided structure protection efforts,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office posted just after 7:30 p.m. “Fire resources will remain at this site throughout the night.”

Lost Canyon will remain on pre-evacuation until further notice, said the Lake County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.
An evacuation center at the 6th Street Gym in Leadville was open briefly but had closed by Tuesday night. The sheriff’s office said it would reopen if necessary.
The fire was reported around 1:35 p.m. and crews from multiple agencies arrived about 5 minutes later, according to the sheriff’s office. The fire is on U.S. Forest Service land, so the federal agency has taken over the fight.
People in the area were advised to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to work. Lake County government advised people also to “avoid overwhelming dispatch with inquiries as they coordinate resources.”
