(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released information on the arrest of Fort Carson soldier Caden Meade for alleged sexual assault and kidnapping.

According to CSPD, around 1 a.m. on July 8, officers were called to Quail Lake Park about a kidnapping. The caller said that a woman had gone to her vehicle to get a jacket to use as a pillow. The caller heard what they called a “blood-curdling” scream coming from where the vehicle was parked and saw a dark truck speeding away.

While police were investigating, at around 2:30 a.m., dispatchers received a call that the victim had walked into a hotel and reported that she had been kidnapped. Officers noted she was wearing a white shirt that was on backward, blood on her fingernails, and a large bump on her head.

The woman told officers she was sexually assaulted and described the suspect as a white man, 6′ tall, wearing all black, and with a face covering. The woman was taken to the hospital for further medical evaluation.

While at the hospital, the woman told police she got her injuries during the assault. While she was at Quail Lake Park with someone listening to music, she got up to get a jacket to use as a pillow. While she went to her car, she saw the suspect’s truck passing her after she crossed the road. After getting the jacket and as she was about to lock her doors, the suspect pushed her to the ground and held a knife to her.

The suspect allegedly told the victim to be quiet if she wanted to stay alive while pointing the knife at her. The victim screamed, hoping to get to her vehicle and that someone would hear her. She was then grabbed by her neck by the suspect and forced into the truck.

According to the affidavit, the suspect then started driving, telling the victim, “This will only take thirty minutes.” The victim offered money and jewelry, but the suspect told her to keep it. The suspect took her to a location later to be determined to be a school located in unincorporated El Paso County. The victim told police the suspect asked a series of questions, such as how many people she had been with and if she was Christian. The victim told police the suspect appeared to be acting rushed like he wanted her to answer his questions as quickly as possible.

When the victim asked the suspect if he could at least use a condom, the suspect then sexually assaulted her.

The suspect then drove away with the victim still inside the truck. The victim asked the suspect why he picked her, to which he responded, “I don’t know. You got picked. It was natural selection.”

At some point, the victim asked the suspect if she could get out of the truck, and the suspect stopped the truck and allowed her to exit. The woman had on a sleeveless turtleneck shirt, but when she got dressed after the assault, she could not find it.

After police’s interview with the victim, a detective went to the location of the reported sexual assault. The detective saw multiple cameras around the exterior of the building. While the officer was at the suspected scene, a school security guard approached the officer and helped police view the security footage. The officer identified a dark colored truck believed to be the suspect’s vehicle entering the parking lot. The officer saw two black objects sticking up in the bed of the truck.

Police reached out to the public with a forensic sketch of the suspect and images of the suspect vehicle for help identifying the two. On July 10, the detective got information from CSPD’s Real Time Crime Center unit that they had located a potential match for the suspected vehicle with similar items in the bed of the truck.

On July 15, the detective got more information on the truck, including its involvement with a traffic stop months earlier. The call for service came from 19-year-old Caden Meade, who reported his truck had broken down. The detective also learned that Meade had enlisted in the U.S. Army and had ties to Fort Carson.

Further investigation by the detective found Meade had scanned into Fort Carson at around 4 a.m. on July 7. Surveillance photos showed Meade in a truck matching the description, along with similar objects seen by the detective in the bed of the truck.

CSPD worked with U.S. Army CID to bring Meade in for collection of DNA, fingerprints, and photographs, along with cellular devices that may have been with him at the time. Meade was taken into custody on July 16 in the 4400 block of Venetucci Boulevard after he left Fort Carson.

The detective interviewed Meade, who initially told officers he was with his parents sightseeing in the afternoon of July 7 and that evening they returned to their hotel, where Meade slept. At around 4 a.m., he dropped his parents off at the Colorado Springs Airport.

The detective showed Meade photos of him at Gate 1 of Fort Carson at around 4 a.m. and asked him about the objects sticking up in the bed of his truck, which he identified as a broken table. Meade was shown images of the suspect vehicle at a different location, and he told police, “It is my truck.”

Meade later told the detective that after he dropped off his parents at the hotel, he told them he was returning to the barracks, then said, “And, uh, incident, you know.” Asking what Meade meant, he told police, “Uh, with the lady, at the park.” The affidavit then states Meade told the detective he had sexually assaulted the woman.

The detective in the affidavit said that due to the extreme nature of Meade’s actions–his use of threats, power, and violence to seize and move the victim with the intent to harm her sexually–his actions present an extreme risk to public safety, and asked that his bond be elevated to $500,000.

Meade’s bond was set to $500,000 on July 17.
