Arrests made in shooting case in downtown Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) arrested two suspects who may have been involved in a shooting that occurred in downtown Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Aug. 7

CSPD received a call for service regarding a shooting in the 100 block of East Boulder Street on Aug. 7. Upon arrival, officers found a man with at least one gunshot wound who was dead on the scene. That same day, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified him as 44-year-old Dieter Gayfield.


Overnight shooting in downtown leaves one dead

While the coroner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death, this case is being investigated as a homicide.

During the investigation, CSPD identified and developed probable cause to arrest two suspects in this case. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, officers arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Matos-Michaelis who was charged with first-degree murder. A second suspect, 26-year-old Gabriel Ian-Justice Russo was also arrested on Thursday, Aug. 22 on second-degree murder charges.
