CDOT breaks ground on Airport Road interchange

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Thursday, July 25, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and construction partners broke ground on a new diverging diamond interchange at Powers Boulevard and Airport Road.

According to CDOT, diverging diamond interchanges move left-turning traffic onto the opposite side of the road, so turning traffic never crosses oncoming traffic, which CDOT said reduces dangerous crashes, like t-bone crashes. Diverging diamond interchanges have already been implemented on Fillmore Street at I-25, on Woodmen Road at Union Boulevard, and on Research Parkway at North Powers.

CDOT said the Airport Road diverging diamond project will realign Airport Road to the north and over Powers Boulevard, improve the Airport Road/Stewart Avenue intersection and add pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Work includes bridge and ramp construction, placing embankment, concrete paving, overhead sign structure installation, new traffic signals and permanent water quality ponds. Funding for the project was planned through Colorado Senate Bill 260.
