Colorado Springs man accused of threatening Tesla owners

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado announced on Wednesday, April 16, that a Colorado Springs man was arrested and facing charges of Interstate Communication of Threats after threatening to kill the owners of Teslas.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on March 20, emails from [email protected] were sent to various media outlets across state lines. The emails contain a “Declaration of War” against the 47th Presidential Cabinet and describe how Tesla owners would be murdered on April 17, and the deaths would continue until the death of Elon Musk.

The threats were investigated by the Denver Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Also on March 20, the suspect, identified as Carl Howard Payne, Jr., sent the same email to ProPublica and Thomson Reuters from Signal user “c.” Payne allegedly also deposited threatening letters for delivery by the United States Postal Service to several insurance companies. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the return address of the letters indicated they were from “The White House,” but the letters were postmarked in Denver.

A review of the Internet Protocol (IP) address information, along with other information, indicated that Payne was the user of the Proton Mail and Signal accounts, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
