Did Southern Colorado skip spring?

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — It’s been a couple of months filled with storms, severe weather and high heat. But some Southern Coloradoans might be wondering if we even saw calm spring weather.

In order to have calm spring weather, we need to be around our average for this time of year. Average temperatures for May should be in the 70s and in June we should be in the 80s.

However, as we take a look at temperatures over the last 31 days, we actually spent at least half our time either with temperatures 10 degrees below normal or 10 degrees above average. We rarely sat in our normal temperature range during the months of May and June, and it either felt like winter or summer.

In addition, we went above our average amount of rainfall. In the month of May, 48% of the month had showers and thunderstorms and even hail. In June, 65% of the month so far has had thunderstorms and even a tornado.

In the time between May and June, we saw a significant gain in water levels and reduction of drought. As of June 23, the region has seen more than an inch above our normal amount of rainfall. We normally should see less storms and a little more calm and dry days.

So if you are feeling like we have gone from one extreme to another, you would be correct.
