Fort Carson welcomes new 4th Infantry Division commanding general

(FORT CARSON, Colo.) — The Mountain Post and the 4th Infantry Division are welcoming a new commanding general.

On Wednesday, June 18, Fort Carson hosted a change of command ceremony to welcome Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Ellis as the new general of the Ivy Division. Ellis commissioned as an infantry soldier in the U.S. Military Academy in 1994. He has served in various units across the Army, including the 75th Ranger Regiment, and has deployed multiple times to the Middle East in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Prior to arriving at Mountain Post, Ellis served as the director of the Command and Control Cross-Functional Team at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, where he was responsible for the continuous improvement of command, network transport, control, and intelligence to enable mission command.

Doyle said he is excited for the opportunity at Fort Carson.

“This is an assignment that army officers covet,” said Doyle. “I’ve tried to be assigned here multiple times, this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to serve here, and I’m very excited for the opportunity. The community has been welcoming, the installation’s been welcoming, and the unit’s been welcoming. We’re just excited to be joining this team here and look forward to getting out, meeting people in the great state of Colorado.”

During the ceremony, the post bid farewell to Maj. Gen. David S. Doyle, who arrived at Fort Carson in 2023, after serving as the chief of staff for U.S. Central Command in Florida.

While at Fort Carson, he deployed to Poland in support of Operation Assure, Deter, and Reinforce, where he and the Division headquarters provided command and control to U.S. ground forces, enabling security and cooperation with partner militaries to improve regional stability.

During his time there, he also led quality-of-life initiatives for soldiers and families, such as the renovation of 14 barracks buildings and the construction of 56 housing units. Doyle will leave Fort Carson for U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
