(WOODLAND PARK, Colo.) — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo has confirmed another tornado from the storm on Wednesday, July 30.
A damage assessment was performed on Monday, Aug. 4, after delayed reports of extensive tree damage were discovered in Woodland Park. NWS confirmed a tornado touched down six miles west of Woodland Park on July 30 at 1:55 p.m. The tornado traveled 0.8 miles or 50 yards
During the survey, widespread tree damage with the primary damage indicating uprooted softwood trees, “with an occasional snapped softwood tree.”
“The path of the tornado was clear as there were trees oriented in a cyclonic pattern,” the NWS stated.
According to the National Weather Service, the end of the damage path was inaccessible due to the amount of trees “mangled” over one another. The tornado received an EF-1 rating, with estimated peak winds of 110 mph.
Earlier in June, the NWS confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Teller County, two miles northeast of Divide. The tornado caused about 15 and a half acres of damage.
While higher terrain tornadoes are less frequent, they are not unheard of. According to the NWS, tornadoes in Colorado have been reported as early as February and as late as November. However, the tornado threat increases between May and August.
