Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on S. Circle identified

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — On Wednesday, March 19, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) released the identity of the victim in a fatal hit-and-run crash on South Circle Drive as 28-year-old Patrick McCarthy.

According to CSPD, when officers arrived on the scene at the 600 block of Circle, near Airport Road, around midnight on March 11, they found that McCarthy had been hit by a car that had fled the scene. McCarthy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Major Crash Unit took over the investigation, which revealed that McCarthy had been walking west and was in the middle of the roadway when the vehicle hit him. The suspect’s vehicle appeared to be travelling at high speeds, according to CSPD.

CSPD gathered information on the suspect while officers investigated, and located him in the 2500 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue, near Printer’s Parkway, according to police. When confronted, the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Dominic Rodriguez, allegedly tried to use a small child as a shield.

The child was safely removed, according to CSPD, and Rodriguez was taken into custody. Police discovered that he had an active felony warrant. He was arrested on charges of Hit & Run Involving Death, Vehicular Homicide- Reckless Driving, Child Abuse (non-injury), and Reckless Endangerment.

On March 11, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and identified the victim of the hit-and-run as McCarthy.

This was the third traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year, compared to last year at this time when there were 15.
