Smoke will be visible again today from prescribed burn

(MONUMENT, Colo.) — The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) began test fires on day two of the Monument Fire Center prescribed burn on Thursday, June 13. The public should expect to see smoke throughout the day, especially east of I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs, and in the town of Monument.

“All operations are normal,” wrote the USFS on its X page (formerly known as Twitter). “Test ignitions were successful and ignitions are continuing. Smoke is lifting well today.”

The Monument Fire Center prescribed burn is taking place about a mile and a half west of town, on Forest Service lands. On Wednesday, June 12 more than 300 acres were treated as part of the prescribed burn and crews remained on the scene overnight to patrol the area.

The burn is expected to take place over three days at Memorial Grove, Monument Rock, and the Mt. Herman trailhead. The USFS said the Colorado Springs Fire Department will be assisting the Forest Service during operations.
