Suspect in Palmer Lake hit and run turns himself in

(PALMER LAKE, Colo.) — The Palmer Lake Police Department (PLPD) said Brent Gilmer the suspect in an alleged hit-and-run has been arrested by police, after turning himself in.

PLPD said on June 23 at around 8:15 p.m. officers got a call for a crash at the intersection of Highway 105 and Westward Lane. Officers were told it was a crash between a motorcycle and a truck. Several witnesses ran to the aid of the motorcyclist who was thrown off the motorcycle and appeared to have serious injuries. The two occupants of the truck left the scene without checking on or exchanging any information with the other person.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

PLPD identified the driver of the truck as Brent Gilmer, on July 3 PLPD sent out a public notice asking Gilmer to turn himself in after it was brought to police’s attention that Gilmer had made social media posts about the crash.

On Tuesday, July 6 PLPD said Gilmer submitted a tip through CrimeWatch saying he wanted to see that record straight and had to figure things out before turning himself in. Officers contacted Gilmer and conducted an interview before placing him in custody.

Gilmer was taken to the Criminal Justice Center and is facing the following charges:

Vehicular Assault, reckless manner causing serious bodily injury

Failed to remain at scene/give info/aid after accident

Failed to give info/aid after damaging another vehicle

Failed to remain/return to the accident scene as directed by police

Drove vehicle without valid driver’s license

Reckless driving
