DENVER (KDVR) — At 12,456 feet above sea level, tucked inside the Rocky Mountains, lies a European-style bistro that’s only accessible by chair lift.
The restaurant serves up wine and cheese pairings from imported and local spots with 360-degree views of the snowy mountains. You can find this restaurant, il Rifugio, at the top of Arapahoe Basin at Snow Plume.
This spot is most well-known for its location, as the restaurant says it’s the highest-elevation restaurant in North America. While the Google Reviews rave over the view and location, the food is a stand out as well.
One Google Review reads:
“Great Italian bistro restaurant in just about the strangest place you could find one. The flatbread was way better than anything I’ve ever had on a ski resort. It’s like a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant at 12.5k feet. Great views but you have to ski down some challenging terrain,” said Roger.
Another reviewer wrote:
“The cannoli brought my friend to tears. If there is a fire, leave your skis and grab the cannolis. 15/10,” said Alison.
You might’ve missed this restaurant over the years. It first shut down due to the pandemic, according to Travel + Leisure, before opening up again last year. When it opened again, it also came with some sustainable renovations which you’d probably only find on top of the mountain.
According to the website, the building has composting toilets, minimal waste, no running water, and the highest solar array in North America on its roof.
It’s now open again from Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Head to the summit and fill up on soup, salad and flatbreads, but be sure to save some room to ski down.
